The Consultant Guide

In either case, if your application is rejected you may appeal to the Chief Executive of the HSE or to an
               independent appeals panel.
Before making an application, it would be best practice to discuss the decision with your Clinical
               Director or Hospital Manager.

               Probation
The standard probation period for Consultants is twelve-months. This may be extended by six months
at the discretion of the employer; specific reasons for that extension must be relayed to you in writing.

From the appointment date, the employee will be subject to ongoing review with a formal review to
be held within the first six months of employment.

At the end of the probationary period the employing authority will confirm if your performance has
               been satisfactory.

If you take up a new post having already served for twelve months as a Consultant in an Irish hospital
you do not need to complete the probationary period again.

               Working Hours
Contractual working hours will vary depending on the role applied for. A typical full-time Consultant
will have a thirty-nine hour per week commitment. In some circumstances, less than whole time
appointments will be made, with a corresponding pro-rata salary reduction.

The pattern of your work should be discussed and agreed with your Clinical Director, as per the
               contract.

If you have an on-call liability of 1:4 or more onerous you are entitled to receive rest days. This is
discussed further in a later section.
