3. Subtraction (17x)-(20x) = -3x The form 17x-15x can also be written as the addition of

                       two algebraic forms (17x)-(15x)

Example 2.1 Addition of algebraic forms

               Find the sum of 7a + 4b with 8a-6b.

               Solution:

               (7a + 4b) + (8a 6b) = 7a + 4b + 8a + (–6b) spread out
                                     = 7a + 8a + 4b + (–6b) collect similar tribes

                                     = 15a + (−2b) operate like tribe
                                     = 15a-2b simplify

                  Example 2.1 Subtraction of algebraic

                  forms
               Find the subtraction of 7a + 4b by 8a-6b.

               Solution:

               (7a + 4b)-(8a 6b) = 7a + 4b – 8a (−6b) spread out

                                     = 7a 8a + 4b + 6b collect similar tribes

                                     = a + 10b operate like tribe
