Trey Canard kicked off his season with an average fifth overall but a fall in the first moto kept him from mixing it up with the leaders. Coming into Glen Helen he knew if he wanted a crack at the leaders he needed a stellar start. So he put in a quick sixth fastest lap time to get a solid gate pick
to increase his chances at the holeshot. Canard got what he needed when the gate dropped for moto one. He rocketed down the signature long Glen Helen start straight and secured the holeshot over Ryan Dungey. His lead would only last a few more corners, as Dungey would go by around the outside as they climbed Mount St. Helens. Canard settled into the second spot staying with Dungey before sliding out on the exit of the big Talladega turn to start lap two. He was in a peculiar position on the track and lost a ton of spots before being able to remount in thirteenth. That marked back-to-back weeks he would go down early after a great start. Frustrated, he started picking off riders each lap until the halfway point. He found himself in eighth place and made a charge for one more position before the race ended finishing in seventh for the moto. Canard couldn’t notch his second holeshot of the day in moto two but he did put himself in great position coming out in fifth place. He made a quick move on Justin Barcia for fourth place in the opening stages and then set his sights on Pourcel for third. It took him a few laps to get there but he was finally able to squeak by and take the third place position. He looked to be in control there but a wild El Hombre came storming by to take the position but then he would nearly go down hard letting Canard right back by. Canard tried to hold onto third a little tighter after that encounter but he fell victim to a classic Eli Tomac second half charge. Tomac would take the position from Canard pushing him to fourth where he would finish. It would be 7-4 moto scores for Canard and he has to be wondering what could have been after his early race fall in moto one.
