Simply Notice Your Concepts
YOUR SELF-CONCEPT
Your self-concept is faulty and self-limiting for one simple reason: you are
more than a concept.
I meet people frequently who are unhappy because they are not living
up to their concept of who they are or who they imagine they are supposed
to be. Some judge themselves as too passive, others as too sad, others as too
greedy, and on and on. I even meet people who are so unhappy with who
they think they are that they try to do away with themselves. Sometimes
they try this physically, and other times they do it by creating new concepts
of how and who they want to be. I’ve met people who try to fit themselves
into one self-concept after another. This is a surefire way to become
dissatisfied. Breaking through concepts is a very powerful tool when it
comes to Gremlin-Taming.
In my work with families, I have noticed that personal growth and
enjoyment begin emerging rapidly once family members begin to recognize
that their style of being together does not have to approximate the style of
any other family. At the point when family members begin to see clearly the
rigidity of their concepts and expectations regarding themselves, one
another, and their family as a unit, the pleasure begins. They are then free to
go around tapping their creativity and focusing on the goal of developing a
dynamic, harmonious mini-society suited to their particular desires and
personalities. The same is true for individuals.
