Page 11 - Mousy Mouse Has a Bad Day
P. 11

“How does the game work?” asked one of the younger mice. “Well,” said Herman, “we all know that the farmer always has a plate of cheese on his table. All you have to do is sneak into the farmer’s house, run up the leg of the kitchen table, grab a piece of cheese off the plate and come back here without being caught by the cat. The one with the biggest piece of cheese wins.”
All of the mice went to the window on the second level of the barn where they could look into the farmhouse windows. They watched as the farm cat, Precious, the name the farm people gave the cat, walked throughout the house. The mice had a different name for the cat, “Old Meany.”
Once Precious had left the kitchen for another room, Herman ran down the loft ladder. Then he ran out of the barn through a split in the door. He ran as fast as he could across the barnyard to the farmhouse. He then slipped through a small crack on the outside of the house at the kitchen. Once in the kitchen, he ran as fast as he could, scrambling up the kitchen table leg. All this running and scrambling made a fair amount of noise even with a mouse doing it.
