Page 12 - Mousy Mouse Has a Bad Day

All of the other mice saw Herman once he got on top of the table. They saw him grab a piece of cheese just as Precious began running from room to room. They saw Herman leap from the table to the floor just as Precious, responding to the noise, ran into the kitchen. For a few seconds, the mice in the barn loft could see neither Herman or Precious. They held their breath, watched and listened.
Then suddenly, Herman burst out of the kitchen wall crack with a large piece of cheese. He was running as fast as he could through the barnyard, toward the barn. Precious could do nothing but stand on his hind legs and watch through the kitchen window as Herman ran into the barn.
All of the mice began cheering and slapping each other on the back. They said things like “No one can run as fast as Herman,” and “Herman can fool that old cat every time.”
Herman ran up the loft ladder with his cheese in one hand. He put it down in front of all the others and said, “That is how you play the Cheese Game. Now see if anyone can bring back a bigger piece of cheese and beat me.”
