P. 8

Then he said, “This stupid bee should not sting me.” Now I was sure that he was going to throw something at the hive.
But then he said to himself, “This is really bad. What should I do?”
He thought and thought and then he said to himself, “Getting angry and hitting at the nest won’t do any good because the other hornets will come out and will sting me. Being scared and running away is no good because the noise will make the other hornets angry and they will chase me.”
He told himself that he was smart enough to figure out what to do. As he calmed down, he remembered something and said it out loud to himself, “Bees only sting when they feel threatened, like when I bumped the hive. Even though this sting really hurts, the hornet only did it to warn me away. If I move away very slowly, with no loud noises, they won’t get excited and chase me.”
And that’s exactly what he did. Now I want you to know, a lot of hornets came out of the hive and were buzzing around it. They were all watching the third boy to see what he was going to do.
What do you think happened next? Well, the hornets flew close to the boy but he kept backing away very slowly. He was rubbing his cheek where he had been stung but he wasn’t saying a word. The boy continued backing away and slowly the hornets went back into their hive.
