But you know what; he really did want the Medal but was too afraid that someone might make fun of him and his wing flapping.
Almost two weeks went by and that Trying Medal just sat at the bottom of the nest. Then one morning, I. M.’s parents woke up to some huff and puffing and turned to see I. M. flapping his wings as hard as he could. He continued till lunch. When he came back to the nest exhausted, his mother told him, “I.M. that is enough for today. Why don’t you just rest while I get the Medal.”
I. M. shook his head and said, “No mother, I am going back out to continue my wing flapping exercise. It is not the wing flapping that is difficult or scary, it is the way others look at me and call out ugly names because I am not very good at wing flapping. I have to stay out there practicing until that does not bother me anymore.”
