In the morning, he noticed that the “Trying Medal” was hanging from a branch next to the nest but no one was talking about it. I.M. tried to ignore it but he could not and finally he asked his mother, “What can I do to get to wear the Medal in my feathers today?” His mother turned to him and said, “I don’t know, just something difficult or scary.”
I. M. thought about what his mother said and came up with a very scary idea. He looked at her and said, “I want to step out of the nest but just one step.” His mother smiled and asked, “Will that be scary?” I.M. replied “Oh yes mother, very scary!” So I. M.’s mother agreed that one step was an acceptable challenge.
With his heart beating very hard in his chest, I.M. put one claw out of the nest and on to the branch. Then he took a deep breath and put the other claw out. He stood there for a few moments and looked around and then he jumped back into the nest.
