The simple overhand or thumb knot is perhaps the only knot that nobody ever
has to be shown how to tie. It is self-evident. Indeed, it even seems to tie itself—
in clotheslines, garden hoses, electric leads and ropes coiled and then left to look
after themselves. So it makes a straightforward start to knotting, since upward of
20 other practical knots, bends, hitches, etc. may be derived from it.
