Editorial: The Wristist 24
Scene One
A newly renovated waiting room with lots of seating, a waterfall flows in the
corner, on the wall are brochures and a flat screen TV showing various
wrist products and services.
SALLY: Welcome, I’m Sally, how did you hear about us, can I see your
insurance card?
ADAM: Well, I was having a little sensitivity in my wrist, I googled around
and, since the top google search is always best, I came here. I don’t have
any wrist insurance, is that ok? You have a very nice waiting room, I like all the seats, are you
expecting a crowd?
SALLY: Oh yes, we are very busy. Since you have no insurance how will you be paying today?
ADAM: Well, I have my check book, do you take credit cards?
SALLY: We do accept credit cards, but you may want to consider filling out an application for
instant credit through our office, it’s interest free for three months. Why don’t I give you a
form, it may help you afford your treatment? Fill it out and I can have the paperwork to the
bank immediately. The examination needs to be paid for today, we prefer you pay the $275
fee before you see the doctor. I can give you a receipt.
Scene Two
A nicely furnished examination room with a table, X-ray machine and some photographic
equipment. On the wall hangs a picture of a sailboat, a ski chalet and more brochures of wrist
care products. Jenny, a 19-year-old wearing a bright blue scrub top and a skirt waits for Adam to
enter.
JENNY: Hi Adam, what brings you in today?
ADAM: It’s been over two years since I’ve had my wrist looked at and I was wondering if
everything is ok. It hurts a little when I bend it and it is very sensitive when I use it a lot. I
can tell the doctor about it.
JENNY: I am going to start with some X-rays and, of course, some photographs. Are you
married Adam? My boyfriend and I have been together for three years. Sit here, we can
start with the X-rays and then I can apply some heat to your wrist.
ADAM: Don’t I see the Doctor first?
JENNY: He’s busy with another patient, he will be here soon, let’s just finish these X-rays, and
then I can take photos of your wrist.
Out of seemingly nowhere a youthful Dr. Endermen enters the room. He seems rushed, maybe
overworked, but eager to look at his next patient. Endermen glances fancifully at the sailboat and
ski house and approaches Adam.
DR. ENDERMEN: Jenny tells me your wrist hurts, she does a great job here, she certainly
knows her stuff and she doesn’t have any student loans, can you believe that? Let me take
a look.
