Message from the Executive Director:
2023 - It Was A Very Good Year!
As I write this for the last Bulletin issue of 2023 and look back over the year, I
can’t help but think of the Frank Sinatra song “It Was a Very Good Year.” To
th
start, 2023 marked the 75 anniversary of the Nassau County Dental Society
(originally founded in 1948 as the Tenth District Dental Society). We celebrated
the milestone with a very special President’s Gala in January which included a
video retrospective of our history. In February, at our largest Give Kids A Smile
event of the last twenty years, nearly 350 volunteers examined close to 1500
kids, cementing our position as one of the largest Give Kids A Smile events in the
entire country!
Our Continuing Education offerings in 2023 also set records, giving our members over one hundred hours
of CE to choose from. All mandatory courses were available along with a wide range of interesting topics,
including practice management, implants, prosthetics, and oral pathology. In addition, we had a very well
attended special full day Blockbuster course in September featuring the nationally renowned and enter-
th
taining speaker, Dr. Rich Madow. Our 14 annual Long Island Women’s Symposium, “Scrubs & Stilettos”
was extra special this year by honoring NYSDA’s incoming president Dr. Prabha Krishnan and having
keynote speakers Dr. Winifred Booker, founder of the Children’s Oral Health Institute and it’s “Lessons in
a Lunchbox” program as well as current ADA President, Dr. Linda Edgar.
In September our shredding event volunteers were soaked by a tropical storm. But it didn’t stop them
assisting our members as they brought us their charts for disposal. Our 2023 shredding event had the
highest participation of the three years we’ve been doing it.
th
The year contained some first-time events for us. On September 10 we had our first “Walk for Oral
Cancer.” Designed to raise awareness of oral cancer to the public and raise research funds for the Oral
Cancer Foundation, the event was successful on both fronts. Hundreds attended the walk in Bethpage
State Park which also offered free oral cancer screening, t-shirts, and raffle prizes. We raised over $26,000
for the Oral Cancer Foundation.
th
Our second new event was a Casino Night Fundraiser for Give Kids A Smile, held on December 6 . Over
160 attended the evening. Some highlights included a great buffet dinner, open bar, DJ, 12 Las Vegas style
gaming tables, and the silent and live auction of dozens of prizes. Our event was even featured on WABC
News that evening as their Sports Anchor, Ryan Field volunteered to be our guest MC. (You can watch the
video on our website in the News Section) We raised enough money that evening to cover 75% of the
yearly cost of running our GKAS event and everyone went home with a smile on their face and many with
some fabulous prizes; including a trip to Kenya, a pre-game behind the scene tour of both Yankee Stadium
and CitiField, a flat screen TV, 3D printer, two tickets on JetBlue to anywhere they fly, jewelry, and signed
memorabilia, just to name a few. Look for photos of both these events in this issue.
