Edgar Buchanan was an American actor with a long career in both film and television. He
is probably best remembered as “Uncle Joe” in the 1960’s TV series Petticoat Junction.
But what isn’t commonly known is he was a dentist! He and his wife met in Dental School
and both graduated in 1928. In 1939 they moved their practice from Eugene Oregon to
Altadena California. He joined a local playhouse and appeared in his first film at the age of
                        36. From then on, his wife ran the practice.

Sofia Vergara, best known for her role in TV’s Modern Family and as
a judge on America’s Got Talent, isn’t a dentist, but she did attend
dental school for two years before dropping out and pursuing acting.

Mark Spitz, one of America’s most successful swimmers, was accepted to
dental school in 1972. But after winning 7 gold medals in the Olympics
that same year, he opted for a different career path.

Janet Gardner was the lead singer of Vixen, an all-female hair
metal band during the 1980s known for their hits "Cryin'" and
