This armoire retains full French "flavor" without any evidence of the creolization that would come to characterize most of the Louisiana armoires for the next half century. No doubt this was made by a French-trained craftsman still working in an old world style. Thisarmoire is
an exceptionally rare and important artifact of French colonial domesticity and style. Illustrated and discussed in Holden et al,Furnishing Louisiana, p. 146.
A general note about the market for Louisiana a rmoires
The armoire is the iconic piece of Louisiana furniture. Much like the blanket chest in Pennsylvania, the armoire is the furniture form that best reflects the diversity and creolization of Louisiana material culture. To some extent, they are not rare—nearly one hundred have sold at public auction, mostly in New Orleans, in the past fifteen years. Nevertheless, for many of the examples included in this report, a good set of comparable sales was difficult to find. This was typically due to the type and rarity of the specific armoire. For these armoires, a group of comparable sales are included that outline the general market for Louisiana armoires along with an analysis of how the subject armoire fits into that market. For armoires where good comparables could be found, they are included.
