“Since its founding in 1957, Priory has been built on a
foundation of theology”, according to Ms. Buccola, who teaches eighth grade Theology and Benedictine Leadership, “theology is an exploration of life's blessings.“ At Priory, students are required to take three years of theology classes for graduation. This allows students to “cultivate an awareness of God's Spirit within each individual and situation. It calls for a spiritual, social, and emotional awareness that inspires action towards social justice.” In her words, theology is more than learning about the past. It is learning how to create a better future.
Over the years, Priory has begun to offer elective courses that focus on issues that engage students. In the upper school, courses range from Atheism and Bioethics to Radical Religion and Super Heroes of Myth and Scripture. All of these classes are designed to provide students with practical theological knowledge that can help them
later in life. A new class that seems to accomplish this goal is Benedictine leadership, which “compared to other theology [classes] is a lot more flexible and focuses more on how to be a good leader and less on the history of religion. It teaches us the values of St. Benedict such as humility and obedience,” said Gigi de Fort-Menares. In a world of constant change, theology incorporates the values of old with the modernity of today.
History has always been a core part of education system. According to Mr. Cohen, history is “the study of the past. Some people like to say that history is the study of the past so that we learn from such and are thereby not doomed to repeat the same mistakes. I disagree. History is a story. History helps to define who we are. History is a guide. But life doesn't repeat itself. Life changes.” Tenth grader Maria Naclerio agrees, “Learning about history helps me be prepared for the future”.
