From the Director's Desk

Greetings.

This biennial report, from 2018 to 2020, is a unique one because it
details what the institute was doing, just at the start of the global

COVID-19 pandemic. As I write these words in 2021, with stellar
contributions made by my colleagues over the last year, I see the seeds in
this report of the strengths that emerged in the year to come. But that is

not unusual in itself. The foundations of success are deep, hidden and
laid years before the success. Therefore, when one reads about the
accomplishments during 2018-2020, it is important to consider the

value of leadership and vision of my predecessors that has gone into
making CSIR-IGIB one of the leading national laboratories in the
biological sciences. That said, more than leadership, it is about the

collective work of the faculty and students, ensuring that as an
institute we stay abreast with advances elsewhere in the world, sometime

running a shade ahead as you may agree after reading this report. My
thanks not only to them, but to the wonderful team led by Dr Beena
Pillai, who have finely summarized complex science into something that
would appeal to a non-specialist.

My best wishes to everyone during a particularly difficult time for our
nation, with the hope that we will come out of this stronger, with health

and science becoming inseparable topics hereon.
