41. MATHEMATICS - AC CIRCUITS
Throughout this book, the mathematics required for amateur radio exams has been
used and explained. The purpose of this chapter is to go a little further with the
mathematics for radio and electronics. This will by no means be an exhaustive
treatment of mathematics, but is for those readers who just want to go a few steps
further. This chapter is not required learning for any amateur radio examinations.
RIGHT ANGLE TRIANGLE TRIGONOMETRY
A right-angle triangle is any triangle on a flat surface where one angle is 90°
Figure 41-1 The right angle triangle
All triangles have three sides and three angles. If one of those angles is 90° then we
call it a right-angle triangle. In, the triangle above the square at the bottom left corner
represents the right angle. The angle opposite the right angle is called "theta" the
Greek letter ϴ.
The bottom (base) of the triangle is referred to as the Adjacent side. The side
opposite the right angle is the longest side and is called the Hypotenuse. The side
opposite the angle ϴ is called the Opposite side.
