In the sleepy state of Alagoas was the capital city Maceio
and after my appeal on the radio I waited in my room for
any response. There were no telephone calls but about 12
or 13 suitable candidates arrived over a period of time,
and we spoke and I gathered their material and once again
asked for suitable material for the book on Pele. It is a
tropical state, and the weather was in the mid-30s I went
to my room to rest, to gather my thoughts and filed the
paperwork that was growing. I lay on my bed and the
receptionist called me on the internal phone. She did not
speak English; my Portuguese was limited to say the least
and she put me through to an incoming unexpected call
to a woman’s voice who spoke intermediate English. She
verified my name and my intention and then asked if I
would meet a particular lady who would visit my hotel that
evening, but I was to meet her on my own and she would
have an interpreter with her. If I agreed to this, she would
confirm the time on a later call. I confirmed she confirmed,
and we met later that evening on a private veranda that
had been selected by the hotel for us to meet. The woman
was in her mid-50s and accompanied by what turned out
to be her husband, a man in his late 60s, silver grey haired
and looking very distinguished. She was exceedingly well
