Pernambuco; Alagoas: each of these states, primitive in
their Administration and their location. The union official
gave me the contact for each of these states. It was then
arranged for me to visit these states; not forgetting the size
of Brazil and the distance between São Paulo and these
states was well over 3000 miles. To give you some
perspective this is the distance between London and
Moscow.
So, we contacted each of the representatives; we booked
hotels in the principal cities; we contacted the radio in
each area; I booked rooms in the hotels for hospitality
meetings and off I went on my own with limited
Portuguese to collect as many authors and illustrators as I
possibly could. My target was only for infantile literature
authors and at each venue I spoke to about 25 authors and
illustrators. Over the radio I asked for any suitable material
that an author or illustrator had and to bring it to the hotel
and I set up several meeting times over the period I was in
each city. At every opportunity I asked if any of the authors
had ever written a children’s book to cover the life of Pelé.
Not one of them had any evidence that they had written
such a book, several said they had, and several said they
would: I returned to São Paulo with 83 new authors and
