the newspaper’s archives armed with the story I wanted to

        write.

        I set about the task and wrote the story over a weekend;

not forgetting that it was a children’s story and unlike the

hundreds of pages that are required for a novel this was

not in the same league. I was pleased with the initial result

and gave some indication of the type of illustrations I

wanted and asked my editor to send it to Nellie for her

review; at the same time, I used the name Guillerme

Antonio Nogueira as the author: disguising completely my

own involvement. Guillerme you will soon realise is the

Portuguese version for William: likewise, Antonio is my

middle name of Anthony: Nogueira was my editor’s

surname. So Guillerme Antonio Nogueira was born.

Regular weekly meetings were held as the World Bank

Project developed and at the next meeting Nellie had with

her the manuscript of Pele from the author Guillerme

Antonio Nogueira. She explained that she had been

offered this manuscript to be included in her selection

process. I then had to show my complete surprise and

enthusiasm for this new title and author. She then

delivered her critique and rejected it out of court. She

explained that whoever the author was most definitely a

journalist and had no talent to write children’s stories.

However, she added that we were to write to the author
