I briefly explained the journey that we had taken to get

thus far and why we were using his name to motivate the

young boys of Brazil to read and by return of post he had

agreed to give us the rights to use his name in the title for

the state of São Paulo alone. This was a relief all round

allowing us to prepare our bid for this major World Bank

project.

It is an interesting point at this stage to explain the major

differences between two educational systems: there would

have been no way we could have offered a story targeted

to boys alone in the UK educational curriculum. The equal

opportunities edict was and is very clear regarding the

choice of material. Brazil had not reached this level of

selection at this stage. Something I am very thankful,

although I do understand and support the UK system.

And now perhaps you can see why the book was never

sold in a bookshop. It was only bought by Brazil’s Federal

Government’s education system and used in the state of

São Paulo. As time went by, we received orders from other

States and in turn we had to ask Pelé Sports Company to

include these additional States on our rights for

distribution, which they subsequently granted.
