A LEVEL
               HISTORY

OVERVIEW History explains the world around us today. Its study offers a unique opportunity
to research past societies and cultures in depth, while at the same time allowing
you to make sense of current global dynamics and events. In our
information-drenched age the critical thinking and willingness to challenge and
question at the heart of the subject are in short supply. For this reason History
provides ideal training for a wide range of careers, in particular the law and
journalism. An understanding and awareness of history is vital for making sense of
the present, and indeed the future, of our world.
APPROACH Our course has been designed to help you understand the significance of historical
events, the role of individuals in history and the nature of change over time. There
is an emphasis on seminar style teaching and learning, with discussions and
debates featuring in many lessons so we really need you to get involved!

COURSE OUTLINE In Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918-1945 you will explore how the
weakness of the Weimar democratic system and the polarisation of the political
state was exploited so successfully by the Nazis. In addition, key concepts such as
nationalism, liberalism, fascism and totalitarianism, as well as the horrors of Nazi
                                                  racial policy, will be explored.
Through a study of Tudor Britain, 1485-1603, you will develop an in-depth
mastery of one of the most significant periods of British history. It was an era full
of bloodshed as Britain transformed itself from a series of warring kingdoms into a
unified nation state, and we cover the trials and tribulations of some of our most
fascinating monarchs, for example Henry VIII, Bloody Mary and Elizabeth I.
The third element of the A level is a piece of coursework in which we focus on the
struggle of African Americans for Civil Rights across the 19th and 20th Centuries.
In this unit we analyse the contribution of many other inspirational leaders, such
as Martin Luther King Jnr and the role grassroots organisations played to the
campaign for change and progress in the face of hostile and sustained resistance.
