A LEVEL
BUSINESS
OVERVIEW A level Business is an exciting journey into the world of business. Whether you are
dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur, managing a successful company, or
leading change in a global corporation, this course provides the essential
knowledge and skills to set you on the path to success. You will explore key
concepts such as marketing, finance, leadership, and strategy, learning how
businesses operate in the global world. With a dynamic mix of theory and practical
application, A level Business is your gateway to understanding the global economy
and driving innovation in the future.
APPROACH Lessons are brought to life through real-world business examples, ensuring that
what you learn is always relevant and up-to-date. From analysing the latest trends
in global markets to exploring how top brands are pushing the boundaries of
innovation, we use current news stories and case studies from businesses at the
cutting edge of their industries. Our teachers work hard to create dynamic,
ever-evolving lessons, enhanced by external visitors, interactive workshops, and
guest speakers from diverse business sectors. These opportunities give you a
firsthand taste of what it is like to be part of the fast-paced world of business,
helping you connect classroom learning with the real-world challenges and
successes faced by companies today.
Our students have the opportunity to explore the practical side of business
through a series of exciting educational trips. A few have included visiting Wraxall
Vineyard to understand the marketing strategies behind a thriving local business,
learning about the branding strategies at the Roman Baths, which all offer unique
insights into different sectors. We have also received workshops from The Newt,
an award-winning garden and estate, and Middlewick Farm to explore business
growth. At Painted Horse and Rainbow Rebel, students witnessed creative social
entrepreneurship in action, and at our local Strawberry Farms, they delved into the
agricultural industry’s business strategies. These trips are designed to give students
a firsthand look at how different businesses operate, inspiring them with real-life
examples of success and innovation.
COURSE OUTLINE The Lower Sixth begins with an introductory unit titled ‘What is a Business?’. From
there, students move on to explore key topics such as Managers, Leadership, and
Decision Making. The course then dives into various decision-making areas aimed
at improving specific business functions, including Marketing, Operations, Finance,
and Human Resources, providing a comprehensive foundation for understanding
how effective decisions drive business success.
In the Upper Sixth you will study the Strategic Position of a Business and its
strategic direction; Global business and International trade alongside the external
environment and managing change.
The course is assessed through three written examinations. There is no
coursework. Examination questions include multiple choice, short answer, data
response and long essay questions. It is predominately an essay based exam.
Business case studies are used frequently to provide a context for questions.
FURTHER INFORMATION Business is a broad and interesting subject which enhances career and university
