KERNICK
LETTER FROM
A LOWER SIXTH
My name is Nour, and I joined Millfield in September 2024 as an
international student in Lower Sixth at Kernick House.
Before coming to Millfield, I used to go to a day school in Tunisia, so
moving to a new country and starting boarding life in Kernick was both
exciting and overwhelming. Everything was new: the culture, the routines,
and even the way school life worked.
At first, I felt a little out of place, but the warm welcome from both the
girls in house and our house staff made all the difference! From the very
beginning, I was supported by my Houseparent and I quickly realized that
everyone here looks out for one another. Quickly Kernick started feeling
like a second home.
One of the best things about Kernick is the strong community spirit.
Whether it’s chatting over snacks after-prep, joining in on weekend
activities, or competing in inter-house events, there’s always something
to bring people together. The friendships throughout different year
groups, that I’ve built here have made boarding life so much easier, and
much more fun! Kernick is full of very nice girls that come from different
cultures, which will help guide you through the hardships that you might
face as an international student like homesickness.
Also it's crucial to mention that the staff members in Kernick are very
supportive, welcoming and kind. Do not hesitate to let them know or
to talk to them if you have any issues or concerns! To sum it up, being
surrounded by such a welcoming group of people has made my transition
much smoother than I ever expected.
For anyone starting boarding life in Kernick, my top tip is to get involved
as much as possible. It’s completely normal to feel nervous at first, but
the more you engage in activities and talk to new people, the more at
home you’ll feel. Bringing small comforts from home, like photos or
fairy lights, can help make your room feel cozy, but what truly makes a
difference is the people around you. If you ever need help, don’t be afraid
to ask—everyone here is willing to support you.
I’m so grateful for my experience in Kernick. What once felt unfamiliar
has turned into something truly unforgettable, and the friendships,
experiences, and lessons I’ve gained will stay with me far beyond my time
at Millfield.
