KERNICK

 LETTER FROM LETTER FROM

A LOWER SIXTH AN UPPER SIXTH

My name is Sienna, and I joined Millfield in Lower Sixth in September
2023. I am going share a few of my best tips for joining Kernick in
September! I came from a small, all-girls day school in Buckinghamshire.
It was a huge contrast, and at first, the change felt overwhelming. Moving
away from home, meeting so many new people, and adjusting to a new
routine was a big shift, but the welcoming and supportive nature of
Kernick made the transition so much easier.

My first tip is to immerse yourself in the Millfield experience. The best
way to settle in is to throw yourself into everything that the school has to
offer. Whether it’s chatting with girls in the kitchen after prep, joining in
on house activities, or getting involved in inter-house sports days (which
get very competitive in Kernick!), putting yourself out there will help you
feel settled much faster. Everyone is in the same boat, so don’t be afraid
to say yes to new experiences.

It is very important to find a routine that works for you. Millfield is a fast-
paced environment, and time flies by. It’s easy to take on too much and
spread yourself too thin, so finding a balance early on is really important.
While Millfield is great at helping you manage your commitments, it’s also
worth regularly checking in with your academic teachers, sports coaches,
music teachers, group tutor, and of course, your Houseparent to make
sure everything is manageable. There are plenty of support structures in
place to help you do everything you love while keeping things balanced.

Trying new things can feel daunting, but some of the best experiences
come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Inter-house sports are a
great chance to try something new, and there will always be someone in
Kernick who can offer tips and encouragement. You never know what you
might end up loving, and you won’t find out unless you give it a go!

Most importantly, don’t stress too much about settling in—you’ll find
your people and your place in no time. Enjoy the experience and make the
                                              most of it.
