An illustration is shown in graph 02, which demonstrates the existence of a strong negative correlation between the number of primary share issuances and the cost of capital of Brazilian companies estimated by CEMEC.
Interestingly, the largest cycle of primary issuances, which took place in 2006 and 2007, occurred exactly in the period when the cost of equity was the lowest in the analyzed series. Previous CEMEC studies further show that in these two years, 40% of the Investments in Participations (FIPs) divestments adopted IPO as a strategy for the financial realization of their investments.
Thus, it is not surprising that there has been a clear negative trend in the number of
companieslisted in the Stock Exchange in the last ten years. After the reduction observed shortly after the creation of the Novo Mercado (New Market) and until 2005, and the jump in IPOs in 2006 and 2007, the number of listed companies drops to 349 in 2016, 14% lower than in 2007 (404). (graph 03)
Although the regulatory costs of publicly held companies are attributed a certain responsibility for closing the companies’ capital, in addition to other specific reasons for each case5, it appears that the cost of equity is also a relevant variable in making this decision. graph 04 shows the existence of a high negative correlation (-0.614) between
the number of voluntary delisting and the relationship between the return on equity and its cost in the period from 2006 to 2015.
In the fixed income market, the impact of the interest rate is evidenced, for example, when calculating its correlation with the number of debentures issued by non-financial corporations, shown in graph 05.
It can be admitted that several other factors influence the volume of debenture issues, as is the case of the demand for resources by companies linked to the level of activity and investments. However, the observed high negative correlation (-0.807) reinforces the perception of a significant impact of interest
