Featured Commentary (June): Death and Serious Bodily Injury Investigations
We are passionate about death and Serious Bodily Injury (SBI) investigations – from criminal
defense to civil wrongful deaths, and insurance benefit appeals to family questioned deaths. Of
importance, is the relationship of SBI investigations to death investigations.
In civil and criminal litigation, events of SBI are more common than deaths. Understanding the
process of death investigations gives the investigator a better process to cases involving SBI. From
motor vehicle collisions to aggravated assaults – fractions of an inch, or immediate medical
intervention, may be the difference between any non-fatal event becoming fatal. -- continued below

Helpful Tip – Save and Protect Your Data!
At a recent state association meeting, several of us were discussing the importance of
using an external drive, and SSD vs traditional HDD, for working files – not the PC based
HDD. HDDs are notorious for failing. We had a 4TB filling up and Dean went cheap and
bought an 8TB HDD vs expensive SSD. Within a couple weeks the HDD could be heard
failing (you won't hear an SSD failing... it just dies). Thankfully finding an internal 8TB SSD
and external adaptor was easy – and Samsung is very reliable.
Why external? They are more secure, they are portable and swappable - especially if you buy a new system or work
between laptops and desktops. If you are part of a larger firm or agency, the risk of a network wide loss is possible. If
policies permit, we recommend keeping your current cases backed to an external drive and/or flashdrive.
Backup with a cloud service! We have long used Carbonite - very reliable with unlimited storage and drives (including
external) on one PC. If you have a failure, they will send a drive with all your files - you can return it or buy it (cheap).
