STORY TIME AT THE FAIR
The Coalition for Families will host their annual Story Time event at the Fair on Thursday,
September 12th at 9:30am. The event is open to parents and childcare providers of preschool
age children. In an effort to increase awareness for the importance of early childhood
literacy and to foster a love of reading at an early age, children will hear stories and songs
during the event. Each child will receive a free book to take home. Thanks to the Sanford
Lions Club, children attending the story time will also be able to experience a few of the fair
rides, tour the agricultural exhibit hall, and visit the animals at no charge.
TOBACCO LOOPING CONTEST
Looping was once considered an art…the string had to be tight enough to hold the tobacco
onto the sticks while it was curing and not so tight as to cut the leaves so they would fall off
during curing. Tobacco is looped on tobacco sticks, and then hung in the barn to cure. Once
the barn was loaded, a wood fire would cure the tobacco for about a week.
Adult and Youth Tobacco Looping Competitions have three-person teams competing to see
who can string a stick of tobacco the fastest and the best. Prize money and ribbons are at
stake! Please see Tobacco Looping Contest rules for further details. Adult competition and
Youth competitions.
Central Carolina Antique Power & Equipment Club (C-Cape) will host this event. The
public is invited to try their hand at looping and help fill the authentic log tobacco barn at
the Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds. Tobacco grown and provided by Lee County’s Steve
Thomas Farms. This event take place on Saturday, September 7th, 2019.
TOBACCO TYING CONTEST
The public is invited to help tie the tobacco into hands that has been cured in the old log
tobacco barn at the Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds during fair week on Saturday,
September 14th, 2019. The Tobacco Tying Contest is hosted by Central Carolina Antique
Power & Equipment Club (C-Cape).
