Café Culture
Tallinners have always loved their cafes. A decade ago
things were a bit diff erent. Asking for an espresso would
get you a strange look in many places where cream and
sugar came as extras for which you paid a small fee.
These days you can get a decent cappuccino in virtually
every café, bar and restaurant in Tallinn and, quite often,
with a free chocolate on the side. Cafes often off er a
great meal alternative with many preparing their very
own pastries, breads, unique salads and soups and other
surprises. Free WIFI is ubiquitous in Tallinn cafes.
What to expect when you order
Tallinn serves coff ee in what might be considered a
generally European style. Coff ee in Estonian is kohv.
Generally accepted orders are...
Masina kohv; Regular fi ltered coff ee.
Kannu kohv; French press.
Espresso; Shot of strong, black coff ee.
Cappuccino; Espresso shot with hot milk foam on top.
Latte; Espresso shot with steamed milk.
Americano; Espresso diluted with hot water.
Jäälatte; Iced verison of the latte.
Mocha or mochachino; Latte with added chocolate.
When deciding where to have your cappuccino you might
want to check if the place has a proper espresso machine.
If not, then you will probably get something machine
prepared and generally not as good as handmade.
