In 1629, Pope Urban wanted to renovate an earlier fountain. Tha project was
abandoned until 1730 when Pope Clement XII restarted the renovation. It was
completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1732 after the efforts of four sculpters. The
fountain was reburbished in 1988, 1998 and restored in 2015.

The fountain was popularized in several movies including the 1954 film, “Three
Coins in the Fountain” and the Academy Award-winning song by that name which
introduced the picture.
Everybody throws a coin in the Trevi Fountain. Some throw three coins. There are
two versions of the story. Version 1: Throw one coin from your right hand backwards
over your left shoulder, you will definitely return to Rome. Version 2: This one comes
roughly from the 1954 movie, “Three Coins in the Fountain”, which says you must
throw three coins into the fountain. The first guarantees your return to Rome, the
second leads to a new romance, and the third leads to marriage.
