The ‘Spanish’ part of the name refers to the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, which is
on Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). In July, 2019, Rome made it illegal, punishable
by a fine up to €450, to sit on the steps, drag wheeled luggage or strollers on the
steps, soil or drop your gellato on the steps.

Piazza Navona is one of the most famous piazza’s in Rome and has been used since
the 15th century. In ancient Rome it was a chariot racetrack. The piazza has the
fountain by Bernini, the Obelisk of Domitian and many other churches around it.
