Ancient Rome

Our guide, Dr. Dino, meets us Wednesday morning at the Palazzo Baj for
a 4.5-hour private walking tour of ancient Rome.

We’ll walk past the Circus Maximus, or what’s left of it, on our way to
start our tour at the Colosseum. For every minute of the 20-minute walk
we will be going about a century back in time.

        Circus Maximus was the
        largest sports stadium in
        ancient Rome, with room for
        250,000 spectators.
Circus Maximus was in use by
the 4th century BC, making it
the oldest arena in Rome. It
was first rebuilt in 174 AD,
        then repaired and rebuilt
many times until the end of
the 5th century AD. During the
        reign of Diocletian (284-305),
        a seating area collapsed
        killing 13,000 people.

       The Arch of Constantine, next
       to the Colosseum, is regarded
as the southeast end of the
       Roman Forum.
