How To Survive Baby Loss
that because of sin in the world, there is death. That is true. There is
death because God designed it as the consequence for sin. But God de-
cided when Garren’s heart would begin to beat and He decided when
his heart would cease to beat. I can’t decide to define God by what I
perceive to be painful or what I would accept as “goodness.” Our per-
ception of pain does not define His goodness. God is infinitely greater
than that. “’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your
ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the Heavens are higher than
the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts
than your thoughts’” Isaiah 55:8-9. I can believe who He says He is
and trust Him. Trusting that I will not know all of His ways in this
lifetime. Trusting that He loves me and will do what is best for me,
even and especially when I don’t understand it.”
God takes pain, tragedy and makes incredible stories of
hope, character and beauty. A gem cutter is equipped to cut and
to shape natural precious stones. He has tools that could be con-
sidered painful to the stone. If the stone could talk, it might say,
“Why are you doing this to me? Don’t you love me? This is a sense-
less, painful process! What are you doing?” Near the end of the
process, the gem cutter polishes the diamond, buffs it into the
beauty that we get to admire. The beauty was always there, but
unseen and hidden. I am not saying that God is only interested
in refining you, however, He uses trials to refine us. From glory
to glory, we are being made into His image.
Job is an amazing example of someone who lost all his chil-
dren and was blessed in the end. He lost twelve members in one
day. With him, I like to say we think God is at fault, but Satan
actually did it. It was his idea, and God just allowed it within
parameters. Job could not be touched in terms of death. After
heartbreaking suffering and judgemental friends, Job was bless-
ed with a double portion of kids and possessions. Of course, not
everyone gets the same kids and riches after a long season of
suffering, but it is proving a point. God’s heart is to bless!
It is a tough pill to swallow when wondering why God al-
lowed your child loss. Spiritually, you may be numb and even
blame God for the outcome, but fight bitterness and the urge to
blame God by surrendering. Let go of what you believed God
