UNDERSTANDING FEMALE-POWERED WORKFORCE
WRITTEN BY
KELLY DONAHUE-PIRO
While the majority of insurance agencies are owned by males, the majority of the workforce is female. In fact, the bulk of insurance agency team members are account managers and service professionals, which tend to have a higher population of female team members.
Women tend to have a nurturing personality, so insurance account management makes a perfect fit. This coupled with family-friendly work hours attracts many working women to these jobs.
However, if we are being honest, many owners and managers don’t always understand the world of a working mom and service professional. In this article, I will speak from my perspective of having been in over 1,000 insurance agencies.
While everyone’s story is different, I wanted to share some generalities that I've seen while working with diverse insurance agency teams. Not everyone will fit this model but I hope it brings some perspective on how to unlock the potential of females working in your agency.
Let’s start by painting a picture of the persona of a working account manager:
• Age: 32-55 years old
• Children: Most are working mothers of a two-income family (by necessity to have two incomes)
• Education: High school/some college
• Lives: Close to the office; convenience to home, work, and kids are critical
• Annual Household Income: $80,000- 110,000 (this is very dependent based on location and marital status)
• Marital Status: Married and/or living
