LisA GAusmAN
Ostomy Canada Society Youth Camp Administrator and Senior Editor, OCS
Lisa is a longtime ostomate and advocate for awareness about ostomies. She’s
been a volunteer mentor at Ostomy
Canada Youth Camp since 2007 and in 2016 became co-administrator of the camp working side by side with Pat Cimmeck, camp coordinator since 1992. When Pat stepped down in 2019, Lisa took over as camp administrator. She has also supported OCS as senior editor of its magazine since 2008 and as social media administrator. Last year, Lisa received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, Canada’s highest accolade for volunteerism, in recognition of her dedicated service to OCS over the past 15 years.
Lisa is passionate about helping youth accept their ostomies because she struggled with that herself for many years. She had her first ostomy surgery for Crohn’s Disease in her teens back in the ‘80s when nobody talked about these things. She kept her ostomy a secret for years, but after lots of challenges and changes , including becoming a single mom to son Wesley and earning a BA in Humanities and Psychology, Lisa opened right up.
