Session 4:
The Bible
Discipler leads or even reads the following. Feel free to
discuss anytime.
The Bible can be intimidating. It’s a brick of a book,
more than a thousand pages of names you can’t pro-
nounce and places you’ve never been.
But it’s also a powerful gift from God, one way God makes himself
known to you.
Knowing what’s in the Bible isn’t about mastering the material; it’s
about growing closer to God. It’s about letting him equip you with the truth
about who you are, who he is, and how you can resist the darkness and
temptations of this world.
So come to the Bible not because it’s good for you (it is) but because
it’s a chance to grow in your friendship with Jesus.
The Bible’s not a textbook to study for the Big Test—because there
won’t be any Big Test. When you stand before God in heaven, he won’t
ask you to recite enough verses to warrant admission.
He’ll ask you if you know his Son. He’ll ask you if you’re a Jesus-
follower.
The Bible will help you do both—to know and follow Jesus. Your taking
its truth into your heart and mind will help you in ways you can’t begin to
imagine. But the goal is never to just memorize words…it’s to get to know
the heart of the author who inspired those words.
So don’t be intimidated by the Bible. Be informed and inspired by it.
In this session, your discipler will help you discover how to be both.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans
12:2).
