• To be open to discipling someone else
Once you’ve completed this program, ask Jesus for the chance to
share it with someone else once each year. You’ll be amazed how often
he’ll take you up on the offer.
And here’s what you can expect from your discipler:
• Expect to be prayed for daily
That’s a commitment your discipler will make to you—and it’s won-
derful. To know that someone is daily taking you and your concerns to
God in prayer is not only a comfort, you’ll begin to feel it.
• Expect to see an example
Your discipler is by no means perfect—no Jesus-follower is. But you
can expect that the person discipling you is making an honest, Jesus-de-
pendent, prayer-fueled effort to model what he or she is sharing with you.
• Expect zero manipulation
Your discipler isn’t out to judge you or sell you something. You won’t
be pressured. This is all about Jesus and passing along to you what was
poured into the life of your discipler.
Expect your discipler to be truthful with you about the topics you dis-
cuss, but what you do with that truth is between you and Jesus.
Because, as you follow Jesus, he’s actually the one discipling you.
• Expect healthy boundaries
Your discipler is a friend helping you follow Jesus, not your therapist,
counselor, or financial advisor. If it becomes clear you’re experiencing
significant emotional issues, your discipler will help you connect with a
Christian leader, pastor, or counselor who can assist you.
• Expect to see Jesus lifted up
Your discipler will ever and always be pointing you to Jesus.
No two discipling relationships are exactly alike, but they all have this
in common: The goal is to strengthen your friendship with Jesus. Jesus
will be at the center of everything you do with your discipler.
