The Indian Charcoal Tree (Trema orientalis)

is another nitrogen-fixing tree which was

propagated for greening the island.

Known to improve soil fertility, these trees

can grow on poor soils, and help

regenerate forests. The Sentang

(Azadirachta excels) tree was cultivated

for providing fencing, but also help with

soil conservation and reforestation. The

leaves are used as mulch and organic

insecticide.
