The Delonix regia (Flamboyant Gulmohar

or Flame tree) is a fast-growing umbrella-

shaped tree with a spreading crown that

provides shade while tolerating dry and

salty conditions well. Originally it was only

found at isolated spots on the original

island, mostly along the canal and

shoreline. An ornamental tree often found

by the sides of the roads, it prevents

shoreline erosion, soil rehabilitation and

improvement through atmospheric

nitrogen fixation.
