The turf chosen for KKB land must suit the
site, soil, salt levels, be drought tolerant
and climate resistant. The landscaping
work on the island requires careful
selection and propagation of the best
varieties of grasses for each situation.
Siglap grass (Zoysia matrella) grows well in
sandy soils, tolerates high salinity high
heat and needs little water. As such, it is
ideal for erosion control and lawns in
coastal areas.
Digitaria didactyla is another popular
variety as it tolerates many soil types, low-
nutrient and low pH substrates, and grows
best in lighter soils. It thrives in granitic
sands, is tolerant of shade and occasional
flooding. It persists in dry conditions and is
very tolerant of grazing and moving, so it
often used as a pasture grass for livestock.
