            VI. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 Environmental Pollution- Contamination of the environment that causes discomfort,
                instability and on living organism.
 Following are the types of pollution.

            Air Pollution
 Contamination of air by the discharge of harmful substances.
 The sources of pollutants are both natural and man-made.
 Volcanic eruption, Wind erosion are the natural causes of air pollution.
 The man-made air pollution are vehicular emission, thermal power plants, industries and
                refineries.
 The effects of air pollution are
                 Ozone layer depletion
                 Global warming
                 Acid rain
 Ozone layer depletion- Contains a thin layer of ozone above the earth‘s surface about 24
                to 40km.
 Protects life from the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.
 Reduces the immunity of the body, causes eye cataracts and skin cancer.

 Global warming- Also called as ―Greenhouse effect‖.
 Acid rain- The invisible gases given by automobiles or coal burning by power plants cause
                acid rain.
            Water Pollution

 Caused by the discharge of untreated chemical wastes like dyes, detergents etc.
 The first are a disease causing agent, second pollutant is oxygen demanding bacteria and
the last is water soluble inorganic pollutants.
            Noise Pollution
 Human or machine created sounds that disturbed the activity of human or animal life is
                known as noise pollution.

Biomedical Waste- Spread diseases dangerous to life.

Biodiversity- The degree of variation of life forms within a given ecosystem.
