Points to Ponder:
Ø It is advisable to sit down with your student and discuss both short and long-term goals
before registering for an A.P. course. Make a four-year plan. Of course, it is always a work in
progress, but it is something to build upon.
Ø While “A’s” in A.P. courses are weighted on the GCPS transcript, they are not weighted when
calculating eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship. Know how these numbers are determined.
Ø Some of the courses require applications. For example, AP Seminar requires an application
and students must complete at least one A.P. course during their freshman year and earn a 4.0
G.P.A. in order to be eligible.
Ø The workload and demands in these courses can be stressful for some students. Students
should weigh their current time commitments (work, athletics, service) along with their
academic readiness before choosing to pursue any A.P. course.
