• Always place opened or exposed food inside containers with tight-fitting lids. Plastic bags are not enough to keep them out.
• Regularly clean your food shelves, bins and other places where there is even the possibility of spilt flour or food crumbs accumulating. That’s because moths only need tiny amounts of food to survive and breed. Use soap and water to clean flat areas and use a crevice attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean cracks, edges and corners of cupboards.
• If you find moths in any package you’ve just bought, take it straight back to the shop or supermarket and ask for a refund. Don’t be tempted to place it on your food shelves because the moths will invade the rest of your food.
• Before putting new food into containers, clean the containers. If they were contaminated, they could cause a new infestation.
• Avoid buying food in broken or damaged food packages. Even though supermarkets will often offer such food at heavily discounted prices it’s more likely to become infested with food moths.
• Place bulk materials like pet biscuits into containers with tight- fitting lids.
• Keep your pantry or food cupboards dry because moisture helps the development of pantry moths.
• Don’t use pesticides to get rid of food moths.
