Cobh Broadband Action Group
A small group of Cobh people came together one year ago to address the dire state of
broadband service available to most Cobh homes and businesses. Our concern is for
the community and to help make Cobh a great place to work live and play. Our group
which started with four people has grown and now has the support of many individuals
and groups within the town. We are apolitical and are only interested in advancing the
availability of internet based services for Cobh.
Our first action was to conduct a survey to establish the current levels of service, what
we discovered and the experiences related to us presented a very sad situation. Our
survey showed Cobh as a technology blackspot with negative potential for the com-
munity of the future especially in the area of education, employment and services. Our
aim is to change that.
Some good news.
1. The wireless based service “Imagine” a wireless based service provider is now
selling to new customers in Cobh and are launching an additional 450 new connections
with stable high speed services, see www.imagine.ie .
2. “SIRO” (broadband along electricity lines) have stated that they will install their
service in Cobh this year, see www.siro.ie.
We would like to thank all those that participated in our survey. Using the outcomes we
have lobbied politicians, both national and local, service providers, and others concerned
with internet based services. Responses on the political front have regretfully been
somewhat lack lustre, but this is only the start for us and we intend to continue.
You can help Cobh Broadband Action Group by sending your internet speed and post
code to badbroadbandcobh@gmail.com . This will help us to more precisely map the
situation here in Cobh and to focus our actions for better broadband.
