Update from Councillor Cathal Rasmussen September 2018
This week brought mixed news about works to be completed on our roads. I have been cam-
paigning for the last 18 months to have the Ticknock Hill completely resurfaced and this was
due to start in early October. This is now delayed until
next year due to the fact that the water main needs
to be replaced on the road and while the original plan
was that only a small section needed to be done after
a proper survey of the road it is now agreed that a
new main needs to run the full length of the road thus
delaying the resurfacing work. The money allocated
will now be spent on other areas around the town
that badly need to be done such as College Manor and
Roches Row as well as some other smaller sections.
Works are due to start on resurfacing a large section of
the Ballyleary road and I am delighted with this news
as I have been looking for this to be done since last year. The engineer has also mentioned
that the Velocity pitcher will be in Cobh shortly so I will be submitting my updated list once
again for other works. Some lining will be done around the town with the road from Belvelly
to Cow cross getting most attention. There is no further update on the Lower Harbour drain-
age scheme other than it is still scheduled for starting in April or May 2019. A draft of the new
street scape is due to be issued shortly and once issued it will go to public consultation for 8
weeks for comment. I would encourage members of the public to look at and comment on the
plan as this will shape the look of the town centre going forward.
At present there is a do not use notice issued by Irish Water to the resident’s in and around
Belvelly due to rust in the pipes. Flushing points have been put in on the water main to try
and improve the quality of the water and samples are being taken to check the quality of the
water. The real solution is to run a new water main from Slattys Bridge up to Ballard. This
is estimated to cost 500k euro and the money I am told is not available at present. In the
meantime the resident’s have to rely on tankers of water for their daily use. I have requested
information going back for a number of years on the quality of the water in the area and I am
waiting on the results at present.
The removal of access to the strand at the camber is causing a lot of concern . The official
position is that due to the risk of the cliff collapsing and damage to the steps that the council
have closed the access. I am not happy about the decision and after discussions with the
engineers the matter was referred to the council coastal committee to see if money could
be made available to do some remedial work. I will keep raising the issue of the closure and
more information will become available over the coming weeks.
The Cobh Age friendly committee supported by a grant from the Cobh Municipal district
recently installed two new green benches around the town. This is part of a programme of
works we are under taking to help promote Cobh as and Age Friendly town. We have also al-
located two parking spaces down town for older people and these spaces will soon be painted
to help them stand out. We are hoping to run a training programme in October for all local
businesses to help educate them on the importance of making your business age friendly and
the advantages that go with it. More information will be available shortly. I have made up a
list of faulty street lights in and around the whole town. So far I have reported 10 that are not
working and I would encourage people to contact Airtricity on 1850372772 and report faulty
lights in their own areas.
