156 making instruction work
1. List the things that will be needed in order to provide
relevant practice of the objective. To do this you would
look at the things you listed while describing relevant
practice requirements. Underline or circle the items that
are things (e.g., disassembled crankshaft, drill press,
computer keyboard, tool kit, head of hair).
2. Check that the items selected for practice are those that
will allow students to make the most responses (get the
most practice) per unit of time.
3. Then, if you have other items on the list, decide how you
will provide them. For example, if your list says, “List of
examples,”or “Descriptions of problem situations,”write
a word or two beside it to say how you will present these
items. Will the examples be presented in print? If so,
what’s the most convenient way to present that print? On
paper? On film? On a video or computer screen? If your
list says you need a person to assist with the practice,
write who that person will be. A student? You? Someone
else?
4. If the module will require content in addition to prac-
tice, review your content summary and say how you will
present the content. Pick something that has the feature
needed for the content involved.
5. Now think about your target population. Are the items
you selected appropriate for them? If not, select some-
thing else with similar features. For example, if you have
decided to present information in print but your audi-
ence can’t read too well, pick a way to present the infor-
mation that demands less reading.
6. Are the items you’ve listed available to you? If not, select
something that is.
