goal analysis 47
Example #1: A shop instructor I once knew completed a list of
tasks he wanted his students to be able to perform when they
left his course. But he was uneasy about the list.
“There’s something missing,” he said.“There’s more
to it than just these tasks.”
“Oh,” I said.“Can you give me an example?”
“Sure,” he replied. “I want them to be safety-
conscious.”
“That sounds reasonable,” I said. “Can you tell me
how to recognize a safety-conscious person when
you see one?” And we were off into a goal analysis.
Not long after, we had a list of “performances”(Step
2) that included these items:
• Understands the need for safety practices.
• Wears hard hat in designated areas.
• Sweeps shavings from work area.
• Wears safety goggles while performing designated
tasks.
• Uses saw guard on table saw.
• Appreciates safety equipment.
“How can you tell when someone understands the
need for safety practices?” I then asked.
“Well, they follow the safety rules,” was the reply. So
we replaced the fuzzy with “Follows safety rules.”
