things like complex problem solving, cognitive flexibility,
creativity, negotiation, emotional intelligence, coordination
and collaboration. They’re all very human traits, and will
be strong skills to have.’
I would suggest that those ‘soft skills’ of ‘negotiation’,
‘emotional intelligence’, and ‘collaboration’ are what our
students develop outside of their lecture halls and laboratories,
in their residential community here at Janet Clarke Hall. Living
not just alongside but in close communion with a diverse mix
of fellow learners helps our students grow into perceptive,
resilient, adaptive thought leaders and change makers. Our
College community may now be nearly 140 years old but it is
clear to me, and to our students, that this kind of residential
educational experience is what will best equip them for their
future, whatever it may look like.
