As the College prepares for the opening of 1890s: Margaret Henderson House will utilise the small
footprint of land between the Scantlebury Wing and the
Margaret Henderson House in 2015, an Age tennis court. Although the court was moved with the
clipping from the College Archives remind building of the Traill Wing and again in the 1990s, Heritage
Victoria has noted the strong cultural significance of the
readers of the opening of the Traill Wing as tennis court given the very early date of the College Tennis
Club. This remarkable photo from the archives, showing the
reported 85 years ago – just three years before winning ‘Hostel’ Tennis team of 1898 (Christina Goode,
Margaret herself entered the College. Now Mary Baldwin, Constance Ellis, Ada Sayer, Elsie Traill),
reminds viewers of the storied history of JCH tennis, with
heritage listed, the Traill Wing continues to past players including such tennis luminaries as College
provide ‘kitchenettes for the preparation of tea Fellow Dr Olive Mence OAM (1939) – who had the
distinction of coaching fellow Fellow Dame Leonie Kramer
and supper’ along with the laundry facilities. AC (1942).
Current students still value its
‘Lofty ceilings and generous
windows’ (long ago
abandoned by the builders
of ‘modern’ college
accommodation),
along with open
fireplaces still lit,
with the Principal’s
permission, from
1 May – a date
marking the
Festival of
Chimney
Sweeps.
