야상곡 Nocturne 1, 72.8 x 91cm, Mixed Media on Canvas
composing fragments of simplified landscapes through systematic shapes of omission and simplicity. Thus,
we can enjoy the visual pleasure of imagining the meanings behind the order, relationships, and distances
between the various uniquely crafted shapes within her canvas.
I have followed the transformation in Lee’s work, particularly her style after living in Australia, with great
interest. Just as Mondrian asserted that 'Neoplasticism is about explicitly revealing precise order,' Hwa Jin
Lee uses figurative shapes and restrained forms to present new questions and structures in the formality
of painting. Her work thus holds the value of opening up new possibilities in painting. < Nocturne at Sea >
is a work that depicts the face of the seaside floating in the blue night sky, allowing one to experience an
elegance akin to Chopin's nocturnes, inspired by the essence of 'night,' along with < Nocturne >. Peaceful yet
expressively rich and lyrical, Lee’s works are emotional, much like how James Abbott McNeill Whistler referred
to his vivid and beautiful style of painting as 'Nocturne painting,' and they are pure like Debussy's nocturnes.
Finally, these abstract landscapes, much like her 80 years of age, reveal the sensitivity and perspective of a
veteran artist, captivating us with a rare, gem-like vitality that is seldom seen in art.
